Summary One dissertation cannot compile all the knowledge and insights needed to turn the tide in basic skills proficiency. Hence, dedicated efforts to understand basic skill development, identify environmental conditions affecting basic skill proficiency, etc. are needed. Several aspects that are important for better understanding this development and ensuring that students master basic skills are not addressed in this dissertation (e.g., designing evidence-based educational interventions, the role of schools in skill development, etc.). As we move forward, it is crucial to continue building on the findings of this dissertation and to complement these findings with insights of aspects of basic skills unexplored in this dissertation. 160
