310 Chapter 10 Questionnaire and interviews In total, 139 people with narcolepsy type 1 were approached to participate in the study (Figure 1B), of whom 111 agreed. Ultimately 100 respondents completed the full questionnaire and were included in further analyses. The diagnostic procedures of 86 people with narcolepsy type 1 were performed within our sleep-wake clinic prior to this study and the diagnoses of the remaining 14 people were verified through correspondence with the previous treating physician. Fifty-two of the 100 respondents were below 35 years old and 8/100 were older than 65. Sixteen of the 100 respondents (95% CI [10%, 24%]) reported having used opioids in the previous three years, and four had used two different types of opioids in that time. In each of these four individuals, the periods of opioid use were separated by months without taking opioids. The group of people with recent opioid use was similar in baseline characteristics compared to the group without recent opioid use (Table 2). Age at study inclusion was, however, significantly higher in people who had used opioids.
