Ever since she could walk, she started climbing up and over objects, using them to view the world from a different perspective (mostly upside down). This took shape into a lifelong love for gymnastics, leading her to teach acrobatics in Nairobi (Kenya) for several months in 2008. In her other life, she graduated at the St. Willibrord Gymnasium in Deurne and, in 1986, moved to Nijmegen to study psychology. Since she obtained her master’s degree in 1992, she has developed into a registered clinical psychologist and psychotherapist (in 2000), supervisor of the Dutch Association for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (VGCt) and group psychotherapistspecialist (Dutch Association for Group Psychotherapy, NVGP). She gained experience as a clinician in several settings including a general hospital and, from 2010 until 2023, in her own private psychotherapy practice. Since 2001, the mental health organization GGNet Amarum in Warnsveld provided a steady, confiding base from which to explore and extend her professional identity. At GGNet Amarum, she specialized in the treatment of individuals with eating disorders and comorbidity, and played a leading role in the acquirement of the TOPGGz-certificate (2016). She is actively involved in several national organizations i.e. the Dutch Academy of Eating Disorders (NAE) and TOPGGz and was a member of the National Taskforce Standard of Care for Eating Disorders (2015 – 2017). She strives to make state-of-the-art knowledge about eating disorder diagnostics and treatment accessible for professionals in the field e.g. by teaching, writing and supervising. As a researcher, she has been associated with the Radboud University Nijmegen, Behavioural Science Institute as an external PhD researcher. She is convinced that scientific insights allow us to improve treatment for people in psychological need. At the same time, she believes that experiences in treatment should inspire research. As a scientist-practitioner, she tries to embody this mutual process. In doing so, she aspires to keep an open, critical mind and to stay sensitive to the needs of the people she works with. Mirjam lives in Nijmegen, together with her husband, son and daughter.
