31 Income inequalities beyond access to mental health care RESULTS Our study population consisted of 951,530 individuals with a first specialist mental health treatment record opened between Jan 1, 2011, and Dec 31, 2016. Patients in our study population were on average aged 45.0 years (SD 17.9) and mainly female (529,859 [55.7%]; Table 1). 95,654 (10.1%) patients had a non-Dutch western migration background, whereas 137,505 (14.5%) had a non-western migration background. Patients in the lowest income quintile of the population income distribution were more than twice as likely to initiate specialist mental health treatment compared with those in the top quintile (299,159 [31.4%] in the first quintile, 195,371 [20.5%] in the second quintile, 172,146 [18.1%] in the third quintile, 152,700 [16.0%] in the fourth quintile, and 132,154 [13.9%] in the fifth quintile).
