148 | Chapter 7 Final remarks Within medical education many training programmes have implemented portfolios to support SRL. Therefore, it is troublesome that previous portfolio research considering SRL is limited and only aimed to establish the (experienced) presence of metacognitive activities during portfolio use. The studies of this thesis moved beyond that, as they gained insight in the ways in which and under what circumstances portfolio use can support SRL. Working mechanisms were identified that can explain the potential of portfolio use to support SRL. However, it also became clear that contextual factors and factors related to portfolio use can easily disrupt these working mechanisms, and with that the support for SRL. Consequently, it is important to underline that portfolio use does not necessarily result in SRL of learners. Given the consequences of various contextual factors, it is important to critically appraise if the support of SRL can be a valuable and attainable purpose of portfolio use in a specific educational setting. When such an appraisal results in the decision to include the support of SRL as a portfolio purpose, it is important to realise that deliberate attention for this purpose is required during the design, guidance and evaluation of the portfolio.
