136 Ethnic sorting in football Finally, a better understanding of the relationship between ethnic background and membership ties ultimately also allows us to know what aspects we should pay attention to, and which situations warrant more of our care and support. Consequently, while I follow Max Weber in his conviction that social scientists must reveal ‘uncomfortable truths’ (Weber, 1919, p. 26), there is no reason to paint a bleak picture from this dissertation. If not anything else, knowing uncomfortable truths can produce more comfortable futures, as it is the first step in bringing about effective social change and creating a socially more just world. It is my sincere hope that this dissertation, however modest, contributes to this goal.
