First, participation duration is the number of years a respondent participated in at least one sport without stopping, as greater longevity of participation is thought to reduce one’s likelihood of giving up that sport (Engel & Nagel, 2011). Second, number of sports indicates the variety of sports practised by a respondent in a particular year, with a greater variety thought to increase a person’s risk of stopping a sport. Third, we constructed a time-varying variable indicating the respondent’s intrinsic motivation for practising a sport, as greater intrinsic motivation could reduce one’s chance of opting out of a sport (Coakley & Donnelly, 1999). To construct this variable, we summed the number of sports a respondent started each year due to intrinsic motives (sports initiated for enjoyment, to relax or as an outlet) and divided that number by the total number of sports practised by the respondent in that particular year. Our intrinsic motivation measure ranges from 0 (none of the sports practised by a respondent in a particular year were started out of intrinsic motives) to 1 (all of the sports practised by a respondent in a particular year were started out of intrinsic motives). Fourth, we included sport participation in childhood, which indicates whether a respondent practised one or more sports frequently (three or more times a week) between ages 8 and 12 for at least a year (0=no, 1=yes). Sport participation during childhood is generally believed to make sport participation a more natural and significant part of one’s adult lifestyle (Pot, 2014). Finally, we included personal characteristics, starting with female (1) and
