5 | 161 Career, family, and sport participation: a simultaneous exhibition? How sport participation is affected during the transition to adulthood General pattern: The ways found to sustain sport participation consist of solutions that deal with the shifted resource balance and associated opportunities and constraints for and perceived benefits of sport participation after becoming a student, professional partner and parent, characterised by less structured and/or less frequent sport participation in more flexible, informal and individual settings, and sport activities that can easily be combined with or linked to event-related activities/responsibilities. TEMPORAL RESOURCES SOCIAL RESOURCES PHYSICAL/ MENTAL RESOURCES ECONOMICAL RESOURCES Patterns regarding ways to practise sport during the transition to adulthood (-) Quitting time consuming and time-bound (fixed) sport activities, like practising sport in "heavy" club and/or team settings. (+) Practising sport in “light” individual and unorganised settings, providing a very high level of flexibility and autonomy and hence the opportunity to practise sport where, when, how often, how long and with whom suits best. (-) Practising sport less often and decreasing the duration of sport activities. (-) Quitting socially demanding sport activities, like practising sport in "heavy" club and/or team settings. (-) Skipping, giving up or forgetting about sport activities in “light” individual and unorganised settings, because they are so non-committal. (+) Practising sport in "light' informal group settings, providing almost the same levels of flexibility and autonomy as individual and unorganised settings, but function much better as a "big stick" to get and keep going, since people in the group act as "sport activity anchors". (+/-) Active living due to daily physical activities as substitute for sport participation or to compensate for not practising sport so much or not at all. (+) Making smart combinations by participating in sports activities that are tailored to be combined with or linked to event-related activities and responsibilities. Table 5.2 Continued
