160 | Chapter 15 How sport participation is affected during the transition to adulthood General pattern: Event-related responsibilities/activities are prioritised over sport participation, but deliberate choices are made regarding whether or not to (re)start or continue to practise sport and ways to do so, after becoming a student, professional, partner and parent. There is diversity in the choices made, largely based on people's willingness to participate in sport and on if they see a way to do so during the transition to adulthood. TEMPORAL RESOURCES SOCIAL RESOURCES PHYSICAL/ MENTAL RESOURCES ECONOMICAL RESOURCES Positive (+) and negative (-) patterns regarding the willingness to participate in sport during the transition to adulthood (+) Enjoying sport participation and pursuing a healthy lifestyle, thus being intrinsically motivated to sustain sport participation no matter what. (+) Experiencing social benefits of sport participation: being extrinsically motivated as it provides a way to gain or maintain social relations. (+) Experiencing social support for sport participation: being extrinsically motivated by the presence/emergence of "sport activity enablers/anchors". (-) Lacking social support and motivation for sport participation, when event-related significant others serve more as 'anchors' to activities other than practising sport. (+) Wanting to set the good example to your child(ren): being extrinsically motivated to practise sports, to live up to prevailing norms and expectations recognising that it is the responsibility of a good parent to be a role model. (+) Experiencing physical benefits of sport participation: being extrinsically motivated as it provides a way to stay/get healthy or in shape, deal with fatigue and replenish energy, or to compensate for sedentary behaviour. (+) Experiencing mental benefits of sport participation: being extrinsically motivated as it provides a way to relax, unwind or to release stress. (+) Well targeted sport arrangements and marketing- communication campaigns of sport providers and event-related institutions, who therefore act as "sport activity anchors/enablers".
