252 CURRICULUM VITAE Stijn Bekkers was born on July 18th, 1991, in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. In 2009, he graduated from Stedelijke Scholen Gemeenschap Nijmegen. He was awarded the Melzen award for excellence in experimental research and first prize at the International Conference of Young Scientists for a double-blind, placebo-controlled study on the influence of sound frequency on brain activity. After completing his undergraduate studies at the VU Medical Center in Amsterdam, he moved to Boston for a research fellowship at Harvard Medical School in Boston. During this fellowship, he was involved in several research projects related to orthopedic hand surgery. Hemoved to Australia to work in sales in the following year while completing his U.S. research. After graduating as a medical doctor in 2016, he was appointed as an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery resident at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen. Parallel to his residency, he was actively and passionately engaged in different research projects. These research projects include this thesis under the supervision of Dr. F.J.A. van den Hoogen and two PhD projects in the field of ear and skull base pathology, of which he is the co-promotor. He is initiator and chairman of the ‘Beter Horen’ ENT science prize for residents and PhD students and, from 2018 to date, organizer of the annual Dutch congress for residents in ENT surgery. Stijn has a strong passion for ear and skull base surgery, which is illustrated by winning the first prize of the ‘Dutch Temporal Bone Dissection Prize’ in 2019 and continuing his surgical training in Australia through the fellowship skull base surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane in August 2022. In his leisure time, he meets with his friends, is on a friend’s soccer team, is a keen road and mountain biker, and lives with his girlfriend, Liora, who will be joining him during their travels to Australia as a clinical and research fellow Neurology.
